Celebrated in March or April, Feb 26th this year, Purim which means “lots” and is known as the Jewish story of 5th century BCE in which Jews rejoice still today for being saved from annihilation during the ancient Persian Empire.

According to the biblical Book of Esther, Jews in the capital city of Shushan in the country today called Iran, were to be wiped out. This decree was because the Jewish Mordecai refused to bow down to the kings advisor, a servant named Haman. The king was named A-hash-va-reus (Hebrew pronunciation) and Haman wickedly planned in a decree on the 13th of Adar, to kill all of the people group of the Jews. What almost nobody knew and least of Haman is that the woman that the king favored above all was Jewish. Queen Esther is that queen at the time and she is told this evil decree for her own people. She fasted and prayed before going before the king, who is also her husband. She silently waits for the king to call her forward as her relative Mordechai instructed her. She asks the King to save her people, the Jews. The king in his love for his wife, his bride, decides to reverse Haman’s decree. The king in retribution orders Haman, his sons, and the other enemies of the Jews close to Haman (the evil man) killed instead.

This celebration of the salvation of the Jews is very prophetic. It was not the first time annihilation of the Jews was planned. In the Red Sea we look at Moses being chased after by the Pharaoh to kill the nation of Jews too. The holocaust is another example. We too must wait to hear from the King, Yeshua as he instructs us in life. We can take refuge under his authority. The Bible calls us the bride, those who’d shelter in Him. Christ is the king of all, in fact He is called The King of Kings.

Delicious cookies called the ears of Haman (oznei Haman) are eaten while celebrating Purim each year. We stamp our feet loudly in Synagogues in Israel to remind us that Haman was stamped out by God as he planned evil for the Jewish people. We dress up in joyful costumes to share happiness with one another and remember the great power of the God of Israel to those who wait for Him and hope in His perfect plan though all may seem lost sometimes. It is a joyous day even as Covid-19 sweeps across the world and Israel. We can remember God will once again save us. That is the joy of Purim, that God will intervene. Israel can be seen as the prophetic map, What happens in nations happens here first. So that would mean the nations can be saved if they look to the king, son of King David, Root of Jesse, tribe of Judah, Yeshua, you may know him better as Jesus.

Shalom and Happy Purim today!
