Ya’akov Boussidan : "From the Future to the Past, from Egypt to Jerusalem" -  Solo exhibition, JERUSALEM THEATRE,  2.11.2026-31.12.2026

This first major exhibition of the multitalented printmaker and oil painter Ya’akov Boussidan )b. 1939, Port Said, Egypt; lives and works in Tzur Hadassa since 2011( surveys the breadth of his artistic practice. It features his distinctive flowing calligraphy and innovative illustration drawing on Jewish sources, poetry and philosophy, as seen in his Haggadah (1975) and Jerusalem – Names of Praise (1999; 2005), which was presented to Pope Benedict XVI in 2007. The distinctive etchings are almost three-dimensional.

Boussidan graduated from Goldsmiths College in London in 1969 and later taught printmaking for many years in a studio provided by the school. In Israel, he studied under Professor Joseph Schwartzmann (1906–1985), a student of Käthe Kollwitz, at his atelier in Tel Aviv, and ceramics with Rudi Lehmann and Hedwig Grossman.

His works may be found at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Victorian & Albert Museum in London, and the Israel Museum in Jerusalem, where he received the Erica and Ludwig Jesselson Prize for Contemporary Judaica Design.

On view is a monumental oil painting of Jerusalem, completed within the past year, whose finely layered colors evoke watercolor; the stark black-and-white Motion etching series, which later developed into large-scale acrylic paintings (2010–2015); portraits of family and friends, such as his son Moshe Me’Ori and Professor Reuven Feurerstein (1921–2014). A new group of oil paintings revisits Boussidan’s early interest in allegory, in The Builders Dismantling the Cross (2025–2026). These figurative works are modern in both concept and execution.

As a whole, the works demonstrate an innovative, contemporary approach to painting and printmaking. The paintings are distinguished by the gentle flow of the brushstrokes, while the prints convey movement through the tension between dense black and white. Boussidan’s technical range encompasses silkscreen, etching, inkjet printing, oil and acrylic, pencil and charcoal drawing, and ceramic ware.
