“In-between” - A single New Exhibition by Chomy Groman, Askila Gallery, Jaffa
“In-between” -
On the seam between
two worlds – on observation and exploration
The exhibition “in-between” by painter Chomy Groman presents a tender outlook on a life that sways between worlds, identities, and spaces of belonging. The pieces – made of oil and water paint in the style of modern realism – build a visual language that explores the interaction between the contemporary day-to-day to a past of tradition.
When she left
the ultra-orthodox community, Chomy started painting the similarities and
differences between the two worlds in which she lives. She depicts reality as
an observer from the sidelines – an anthropological exploration of simple and
universal moments of existence.
The
exhibition spans two main series. The first series presents daily
scenes of the Israeli experience. She describes them through an inspecting eye
which suspends the obvious and offers a new interpretation for the shared
reality of the two worlds between which the artist sways.
The second
series is comprised of water paintings depicting colorful glass dishes. The
dishes present a metaphor for a relationship between giving and receiving,
transparency and fragility, light and boundary. Through the
translucent material and colours complex relations between inside and
outside, presence and absence, influence and being influenced are explored.
“In-between” places
painting as a space of being in-between two identities; not a conclusive choice
but constant movement from past to present, tradition to contemporary life, and
foreignness to connection.
